These wine makers came to us with the desire to create a beautiful functional space that maximized energy efficiency and comfort so we took an uninsulated metal storage building and converted it into a super-insulated wine production facility with a contemporary tasting room. With R-40 walls and an R-60 ceiling, we were able to reduce the load on the geothermal heating/cooling system and use the interior slab's thermal mass to maintain consistent temperatures. We added a 700 sq ft earth sheltered wine vault with an insulated architectural concrete skin. Featuring recycled wood paneling and a view into the production facility, this tasting room offers a striking views and inspiring wines.

    • All Glass Guardrail
    • Custom cabinets
    • Rainwater Collection System
On a scale of 1 to 10 the view from this White Salmon home is a 15! We designed this renovation project to capture the spectacular view by minimizing columns, installing an all glass guard rail on the deck and a south facing window wall. We also removed a wall to open up the kitchen and dining room spaces and installed custom cabinets and paint colors to engage the surrounding landscape. This local artist's home now feels like a cabin in the sky. FSC certified lumber and selected sustainable materials were used whenever possible. Local stone can be found throughout the patio and three 1000 gallon cisterns were buried on site to capture rainwater for use in the dryer months. (Glass plate and vessel, and paintings by Cyndi Strid. Ceramic mugs and small plates by Susannah Lints.)

    • Wood and Steel Construction

    • Custom Railings
Adjacent to old Reisling vines, this unique and challenging building is a cathedral to wine. Although it has a simple shape, there's an ambitious skylight that divides the building in two. This intriguing design feature required special structural steel and framing to make it solid and strong. At the same time, it provides an interesting interplay of structure, space, light, and shadow that creates one of the most dramatic wine tasting rooms in the Gorge area.

This simple and comfortable residence has been a treat to design and build in the upper valley. Featuring clean lines, the beautiful wood cabinets, floors and a sliding barn door stand out in the abundant natural light. The bathroom tilework was done in-house and gave the perfect finish for the project.

    • Mountain Views
    • High Efficiency
    • Integrated Systems
This Hood River residence is Green Home Design + Build’s first house built with the “Pretty Good House” standards in mind. Built with double stud wall construction and deep roof rafters, this home's insulation levels are nearly double of that required by code. A very tight building envelope, and an efficient heating/cooling system, give this home tremendous comfort and excellent efficiency. The three bedroom two bath home includes a combined living room, dining area and kitchen area to make entertaining easy. With lots of natural daylighting, the house feels well connected to the outdoors and a huge sliding glass door blurs the boundary between inside and outside even further.

We worked closely with out clients to design a space where communing with a good book is the end goal. We gutted an existing den and converted it into a traditionally inspired library and office. No detail was overlooked in creating this completely custom space. After the office and library were complete we also expanded the bar. What goes better with a book than an aperitif?

Hidden among the trees in Hood River's west side, this custom home was completed in the spring of 2017. The house was designed to take advantage of the natural features of the site while providing a courtyard in its center. The project required approval from the Gorge National Scenic Commission which required its exterior to maintain certain vernacular characteristics. The home features a living roof, a rainwater catchment system, advanced framing, and energy-efficient insulation.

The new structure will feature concrete slab flooring, with integral radiant heat, and tall ceilings with large windows showcasing expansive views to the east hills of Hood River. The addition is connected to the existing building across the front and back covered porches, which utilize reclaimed cedar siding marrying the new and old portions of the structure.

    Hilltop Home

Perched in the Columbia river Gorge Scenic Area above the town of Mosier, this home will accommodate the multiple needs of a growing family. Open and flexible interior living spaces adjacent to large covered porches provide room to maneuver and an integral connection to the outdoors. The home is partially bermmed into an earthen slope to minimize its exposure from key viewing areas in the Scenic Area, as well as to take advantage of the natural insulating potential of the earth. Large overhangs coupled with south facing windows and a slab concrete floor will provide excellent passive solar heat in the winter while shading the building in the summer.

This 1500 square foot house design is comprised of multiple single use shipping containers partially cantilevered above the ground to invoke the sensibility of living among the trees on its sloped lot.
